Windsurfing: The Manor-Felixstowe Wind Direction: SE Wind Stength: 15/22 Surf / Sea State: lumpy Air Temperature: 9 Sea Temperature: 9 Weather: s Max Speed: 25.27 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 25.91 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Looks like 2016 how 2015 finished!!!! A wake at 7:30 with Mag making a
cuppa after seeing the New Year in, us awake after mid-night is a rare
event :) I decide I would like to see the years first sunrise so we get
dressed quickly and head to our van only to discover thick ice on the
windscreen!!! A boil of cold water soon clears the ice and we head to the
seafront stopping on the cliff top to take a pic of the beautiful red sky,
then it’s down the hill parking by the town hall and onto the prom just
as the sun shows it’s face right behind Rough Towers:) The wind is light,
the sea like a mirror and the sky stunning even if a bit on the chilly
side!!! I take several shots here before moving onto The Spa where a
fisherman in a boat sorting his lobster pots makes another nice pic:)
Back home it’s a cuppa in bed while reading a chapter of our books, my
plan was to take the bikes out but while sorting out this mornings pics on
the laptop to send to the local papers I notice the wind has increased and
is SE dead onshore – a top direction for Felixstowe, ideal for cruising
parallel to the beach:) and being a bit colder than of late it’s time to
try my new 6mm Gull wetsuit. So after breakfast I load the trailer, put on
the wetsuit at home as I need Mag to do the back zip up and head down to
The Manor, the best spot in this direction! I park at the end of the prom
and walk to the beach with the gauge to check the wind which is 15/20 mph,
not enough for the 6.5 so went with the 7m and notice Al Wiz rigging up
just along the beach so I would have some company:) The only downside of
the session was the tide was about half way up and coming in making the sea
particularly lumpy especially by the Orwell and The Fludgers. With the
toasty new suit on + hat and gloves I launched easy enough heading up the
coast towards the Ferry end, my plan was to try for an hour if my arms
would hold out and it wasn’t too cold. The first run to The Fludgers I
was a bit under but the wind filled in and I was well powered up and in the
end I did that run 5 times getting closer and closer to the Orwell every
time. Then getting tired I decided that one last run must give me an hour
on the water so went from the end at Landguard all the way to the red bouy
at The Dip – 4 miles in total and windsurfing does not get much better:)
I even had the sun out for awhile even if my hands where chilly! In the end
I was on the water for 1 hour 45 minutes and was absolutely knackered –
shame no other windsurfers came down as they missed a top session and a
great start to the New Year :)
Then I had just enough time to get home, shower and walk around the corner
to a lovely old friend for a top tea :) Fantastic start to the New Year and
wind forecast for the weekend!!!
PS – Got an OK hour in the end of 16.31 kts hour, not bad considering the
lumpy sea and going fast was challenging in the lumpy sea!
